Bookbinders with over 50 years experience

York Bookbinding has been crafting and restoring beautiful books for over 50 years from its workshop in York. Apprentice-trained bookbinder Philip Winskill, with 50 years of experience, founded York Bookbinding in January 2000 following the closure of the University of York bindery. Over his career, he has specialised in binding periodicals, monographs, and theses, as well as in book restoration and repair.

In 2023, Mike and Helen Springall joined Phil as partners and co-owners of York Bookbinding. Mike’s passion for the craft began in 2015, when he attended one of York Bookbinding’s Introduction to Bookbinding classes at the Ebberston Studios. Today, the bindery operates from Wykeham, North Yorkshire.

We specialise in the repair of paper, the restoration of cloth and leather bindings, the creation of bespoke boxes, hand tooling with gold leaf, and periodical binding, as well as the production of new case-bound books and thesis bindings. All our work is carried out using traditional techniques and equipment, ensuring every piece reflects the highest standards of craftsmanship.
