  • We were recently commissioned to bind ten pre sewn bindings for the “Joe Cornish Galleries” in Northallerton. (Joe Cornish is a landscape photographer who works mainly in the north east). This was to celebrate their 10th Birthday Celebrations on the 10th of the 10th 2010 from 10am -10pm. All of the books are titled “Roseberry Topping”, a small Mountain in North Yorkshire. The book gives the history of the mountain and shows many pictures by Joe Cornish, as well as other artists and photographers.
We were given a free hand with the binding styles, but with a budget. We appreciated the opportunity to exhibit our work, so we decided to put a little extra time into the bindings and have some fun.
The picture above shows two of the leather bindings with there slip cases

  • “The Bells of York”. A special edition binding, organised by one of our regular customers. He had them printed, folded and collated by a York printer.
We sowed and bound the books as a traditional rounded and backed binding, then covered them with a gained cloth. The case is embossed with the York crest and blocked using gold foil on the spine and front board.
  • HOLY BIBLES. Every year we are asked to repair or rebind many of the large, black, embossed bibles. They arrive in many forms. From unbound parts to bindings that have been stored in damp or other improper conditions. The spine is usually with the book, but detached due to the weight of the binding.
The picture above shows the general condition of one such book.
Please see the following picture for the finished restoration.
  • HOLY BIBLES – The finished bindings are constructed to be stronger than before, with added strength to the spine and board joints. A new leather spine is made and if possible the old spine is added on the top of the new one. If the spine is missing a new spine with raised bands to make panels and “HOLY BIBLE” wording is added to the make it look like the original.
The cover is then dyed to make an all over, even colour, then a feed is applied (to consolidate the old fibbers) followed by an application of polish.
  • “The Dragon Tree”. A special edition hard binding of this wonderful book. Written and illustrated by Irma Gemmell. This book is available to buy as a paper back and soon to buy as an e book.
The hard binding is section sewn by hand, with blue end pages. Before lining it has had its spine rounded to help it keep its shape.
